Starting and Stopping Acrolinx in Windows

The core server and all installed language servers are separate services:

  • Acrolinx Core Server - The service name of the core server
  • Acrolinx Language Server <LANGUAGE_SERVER_ID> - The service name of the language server, where <LANGUAGE_SERVER_ID> is the number of the language server.
  • Acrolinx Analytics Server - The service name for the Analytics server.

Different Ways to Start and Stop the Acrolinx Servers in Windows

In Windows, you can start an Acrolinx server in the following ways:

Automatic Server Start/Stop as a Service

This startup type is the default setting after the installation. If the service startup types aren’t customized, the services of all installed server types start on system startup.

Manual Server Start/Stop as a Service

You can start and stop the services manually.

The server logs a handshake error if you stop a language server service manually. The preferred way to stop language server is from the Dashboard. For more information see the topic below: Restarting and Stopping the Acrolinx Core Platform from the Dashboard.

To start and stop the services manually, follow these steps:

  1. Set the Startup Type to Manual.
  2. Follow one of the procedures for starting and stopping the service manually.

Interactive Server Start/Stop for Testing

An interactive server start is more flexible and an easy way to locate a possible error in the installation. It requires customization of the service startup types and the startup file.

Terminating Services

In some circumstances, a server service can become unresponsive during startup and the process must be terminated. However, if you terminate a server process while the service is still starting, the index file for your terminology database can become corrupted. If the Terminology Manager becomes unavailable after you’ve started a service that was previously terminated during startup, delete the terminology index file and start the server again.

Starting and Stopping the Acrolinx Servers Manually in Windows

The easiest way to start the Acrolinx Core Platform or one of its components manually is to start the corresponding services. There are three ways to do this:

  • Use the Microsoft Management Console.
  • Use the Start Service and Stop Service options in the Acrolinx program group of the Windows Start menu.
  • Execute the corresponding startup files in a DOS Window or the Windows Explorer.

Using the Microsoft Management Console

To start, stop, or restart a service of the Acrolinx Core Platform using the Microsoft Management Console, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Microsoft Management Console and browse to Services and Applications|Services.
  2. Select a service.
  3. Select one of the following:
    • Start to start the service
    • Stop to stop the service
    • Restart to stop and instantly start the service again.

If you select Restart, don’t close the progress window before the service has completely restarted. If you close the progress window prematurely, the server shuts down again.

The progress window indicates the successful start or stop of the selected service.

Using the Windows Start Menu

To start or stop all enabled services of the Acrolinx Core Platform using the entries in the Acrolinx program group of the Windows Start menu, follow these steps:

  1. Select Start Programs Acrolinx in the Windows Task bar.
    The Acrolinx program group expands.

  2. Select one of the following:
    • Start Service to start the services of the Acrolinx Core Platform.
    • Stop Service to stop the services.

On some operating system versions, you must start and stop the services as an administrator.

Using a DOS Window or Windows Explorer

To start, stop or restart all enabled services of the Acrolinx Core Platform using a DOS Window or Windows Explorer, follow these steps:

  1. Open a DOS Window or the Windows Explorer and change to directory

    <INSTALL_DIR>\server\bin

This directory contains the necessary startup files to start, stop, or restart the services of the Acrolinx Core Platform.

  2. Run one of the following files:
    • acrolinxStartService.bat

To start all enabled services of the Acrolinx Core Platform on the current computer.

    • acrolinxStopService.bat

To stop all running services of the Acrolinx Core Platform on the current computer.

    • acrolinxRestartService.bat

To stop all running services and instantly start all enabled services of the Acrolinx Core Platform on the current computer again.

  3. Use the Status column of the Services window in the Microsoft Management Console to view the status of each service.

On some operating system versions, you must start and stop the services as an administrator.

Starting and Stopping Acrolinx as a Program in Windows

The core server and the language servers can be started as a program in a DOS Window. There are two ways to do this:

  • Use the Start Interactive option in the Acrolinx program group of the Windows Start menu.
  • Use a DOS Window or the Windows Explorer to start the Acrolinx Core Platform as a program.

The DOS Window displays the progress of the operation.

Starting the Acrolinx Core Platform as a program doesn’t start the corresponding services.
CAUTION: If you close the DOS Window, the servers stop.

Using the Acrolinx Program Group

To start the Acrolinx Core Platform using the Start Interactive entry of the Acrolinx program group, follow these steps:

  1. In the Windows Taskbar, select Start Programs Acrolinx.

    The Acrolinx program group expands.

  2. Select Start Interactive.

The file acrolinxRunInteractiveAll.bat in the directory

    <INSTALL_DIR>\server\bin

is executed. A DOS Window opens, and the servers that are listed in the file start.

Using a DOS Window or Windows Explorer

To start a single server or all installed servers of the Acrolinx Core Platform as a program using a DOS Window or Windows Explorer, follow these steps:

  1. Open a DOS Window or Windows Explorer and change to the following directory:

    <INSTALL_DIR>\server\bin

This directory contains the necessary startup files to start the servers of the Acrolinx Core Platform.

  2. Run one of the following files:
    • acrolinxRunInteractive.bat <SERVER>

To start the core server or a language server of the Acrolinx Core Platform on the current computer as a program. The parameter <SERVER> must be added while running the batch file in a DOS window. Possible values are "coreserver" for the core server, and "01", "02", "03" and so on for the language servers.

    • acrolinxRunInteractiveAll.bat

To start all installed servers of the Acrolinx Core Platform on the current computer as a program.

Stopping a Server

To stop a server of the Acrolinx Core Platform that was started as a program in a DOS Window, follow this step:

  • Close the corresponding DOS Window.
